Deer Crashes Program

Deer vehicle crashes most often occur in the fall, which is fast approaching. Last year, we launched our first public education campaign to alert the motoring public about when these crashes most often occur (in the fall, at dawn and dusk) and what to do if they encounter a deer in the roadway (slow down, don't veer). This campaign consisted of distributing brochures and bumper magnets, posting the brochure on websites, launching our own website www.njdeercrash.org, public service announcements on area radio stations, the use of variable message signs in high deer crash locations, andpress coverage. Between us all, we distributed about 100,000 brochures (many through Division of Highway Traffic Safety's network of local police departments)! None of this could have occurred without generous support from the Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the FHWA-NJ Division Office.
